Casa Mayan

This is my one of my favorite stories!

Casa Mayan, located at 1020 Ninth Street in Denver’s Auraria neighborhood, was a renowned Mexican restaurant and cultural hub opened in 1947 by Ramon and Carolina Gonzalez. Situated in an 1872 Victorian home, it served as a popular gathering spot for artists, politicians, and celebrities before closing in 1973 due to campus development.

The coolest part about it? Ramon and Carolina were my great, great aunt and uncle. That’s them in the back of the second photo. My grandma Margarita Gonzalez, spent the early part of her childhood living in the house next door to 1020. Local lore says that the building is haunted. If you stop by for a visit, say hi to my aunt and uncle for me 🖤
