My Trip to White Sands
A few years ago, I took a trip to New Mexico and stopped at White Sands for the day. Once I got over my fear of stepping on a tarantula (it was mating season…ew), I was able to get out and enjoy the park. The first thing that stood out to me was how the white sand was cool under my feet. I had expected it to be hot. Because sand in the hot sun is hot, right?
I also have to tell you I am from Alaska, and there are not many beaches or sandy spots around the state.
Anyway, we walked out just about as far as our time would allow and ventured out onto the dunes. It was magical. White Sands is easily one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The bright white dunes stretched for miles across the desert, creating a landscape that felt more like Arrakis than anywhere on Earth. The sand, which is made of gypsum crystals, forms rolling hills that my iPhone still thinks are snow-covered drifts when memories from the trip pop up. Sparse desert plants cling to life in sheltered pockets between the dunes, and the silence can feel almost otherworldly. And thankfully for me, we didn’t see one tarantula.
The Lore
It's easy to understand why so many strange stories have emerged from a place like this.
While White Sands is famous for its natural beauty, it has also become deeply connected to UFO lore, military secrecy, and stories of unexplained encounters. Just beyond the national park lies the vast White Sands Missile Range, one of the largest military testing areas in the United States. For decades, rockets, experimental aircraft, missile systems, and classified technology have been tested in the surrounding desert.
When unusual lights appear in the sky over a region known for secret military projects, rumors are almost inevitable.
Over the decades, reports of strange lights, unusual aircraft, unexplained crashes, and mysterious activity have continued throughout southern New Mexico. Some accounts claim that unidentified craft have crashed in remote desert areas near White Sands, while others describe glowing objects moving silently across the night sky. Most of these stories remain unverified, but they continue to fuel the region's reputation as a hotspot for unexplained phenomena.
The Socorro Incident
One of the most famous UFO cases associated with the area occurred on April 24, 1964, near the town of Socorro, New Mexico. The event became known as the "Socorro Incident."
That evening, police officer Lonnie Zamora was pursuing a speeding vehicle when he noticed a loud roar and a flash of light in the distance. Investigating further, he reported seeing an unusual egg-shaped metallic craft resting on the ground. Nearby were two small figures dressed in white coveralls. Moments later, the object reportedly lifted off with a powerful blue-and-orange flame before disappearing into the sky.
What made the case stand out was Zamora's reputation. He was widely considered trustworthy, and investigators found physical marks at the reported landing site. The incident drew national attention and remains one of the most debated UFO sightings in American history.
The stories did not stop there.
Of course, there are plenty of rational explanations.
The area has long been home to military testing, rocket launches, classified projects, and advanced aerospace research. What appears mysterious from a distance may simply be technology the public was never meant to see. New Mexico's clear skies, remote landscapes, and vast open spaces also make it easier to notice unusual aerial activity that might go unnoticed elsewhere.
Still, there is something about White Sands that feels different.
Maybe it's the endless horizon. Maybe it's the silence. Maybe it's the knowledge that some of the most significant military and scientific experiments in American history took place nearby. Or maybe it's simply human nature to look out across an unfamiliar landscape and wonder what else might be out there.
Whatever the explanation, White Sands sits at the crossroads of natural wonder and mystery. It's a place where beauty and folklore meet, where science and speculation overlap, and where the line between reality and imagination can feel surprisingly thin.
Whether you believe in aliens or not, White Sands is a destination worth experiencing.
