The Disappearance of Michael LeMaitre
📍 Mt Marathon, Seward, Alaska
Mount Marathon towers directly above Seward and has earned a reputation as one of Alaska’s most challenging mountains. It is also home to Alaska’s oldest foot race that takes place every July 4th.
On July 4, 2012, experienced outdoorsman Michael LeMaitre joined hundreds of runners in the annual Mt Marathon Race in Seward, Alaska. Witnesses saw him climbing toward the summit as fog and rain rolled in.
He never came back down.
A massive search involving helicopters, search dogs, mountain rescue teams, and hundreds of volunteers scoured the mountain. They found no clothing. No gear. No remains.
More than a decade later, what happened to Michael LeMaitre remains one of Alaska’s greatest unsolved wilderness mysteries.
Was it a tragic fall hidden by the mountain’s rugged terrain? A medical emergency in the dense fog? Or something we’ll never fully understand?
Sometimes the wilderness doesn’t give answers.
